Man arrested after reporting stolen vehicle
An East Petersburg man was arrested Monday by Bellefonte police after he reported his truck stolen — when actually the truck was impounded by police because they say he had stolen it himself.
Bellefonte police got a tip Monday about the 2004 Dodge Dakota being stolen from Lancaster County. They found it parked, and watched it for several hours before deciding to impound it because no one returned to drive it away.
A few hours later, Jason Unangst, 29, called police under the fake name, Jason Smith, and reported the pickup “stolen,” police said.
Police discovered that the man had provided false information about his identity and “his” stolen truck was actually the truck reported stolen from the Lancaster County business.
Unangst was arraigned by District Judge Daniel Hoffman and is in jail on $25,000 cash bail.
He is facing theft and false identification charges.
Man seeks new hearing on assault charges
The New Jersey man accused of body slamming a State College police officer is asking for a new preliminary hearing since he had no legal representation at his first hearing.
Mark J. Sargenti, 19, is currently facing trial on charges he beat up a random man on Highland Avenue, then dove head-first into the torso of a police officer responding to the assault.
At his hearing, Sargenti represented himself since he is not from the area and hadn’t gotten an attorney.
He asked for a one-week continuance, but District Judge Leslie Dutchcot denied it.
Defense attorney Lance Marshall wrote in a motion that Dutchcot abused her discretion.
A witness testified that on Aug. 29, Sargenti was hopping around without a shirt before he walked up to a group, put a man in a headlock, pushed him to the ground and repeatedly punched him.
When police arrived, they pepper sprayed Sargenti, but he responded by rushing a police officer, sending the officer to the hospital with back injuries.
