Snow hits some parts of region harder than others

“We’ve probably got a good four inches out there,” he said.

“It’s wet, heavy snow and it’s clinging to everything.”

Like most parts of the county, Weiss said the power had fluctuated in the Julian area.

“It has gone out four or five times now,” he said in a phone interview — one cut short by a power outage.

Weiss said the snow was “pretty,” even if it was clinging to everything — including the maple trees in his front yard.

“A couple of days ago, I was thinking: ‘It’s about time I should take photos of the leaves’ .... I guess I won’t be getting those,” he said.

In Aaronsburg, toward the eastern end of the county, things were quiet on Friday.

Postmaster Earl Leedy said Penns Valley had “a little bit of snow,” but no major problems.

“Not nearly as much as some of the surrounding areas, I’ve been told,” he said. “It’s really not a big day down here in Aaronsburg.”

Brent Brubaker, Patton Township engineer, said township crews saw widespread downed tree limbs and power lines — including at least two power lines that fell across roads — in Park Forest Village and the Circleville Road area.

Crews will be working “24 hours throughout the weekend” to keep township roadways cleared, he said. On Friday, help came from a neighbor, Halfmoon Township.

“They sent their backhoe and two guys over to us to help out as well,” Brubaker said. “So we really appreciated that.”

On Circleville Road in Patton and Ferguson townships, downed trees, still bearing bright autumn leaves, clogged roads.

The sounds of chainsaws echoed through the woods as workers tried to restore power — and access — to some 700-plus homes and businesses.

Jack Williams, a local resident, described the neighborhood as a “disaster area.”

“We’ve had big trees come down ... all the street trees down across the road,” he said. “And the trees are still coming down ... I’ve
