WHITE LOOP

Weekend route time extended

January 15, 2010 12:49am EST

Centre Area Transportation Authority's White LOOP service will be extended from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights on a trial basis this semester.

University Park Undergraduate Association had made the request for later LOOP hours as an alternative to an earlier “Highlands Loop” proposal, with the goal of providing safe transportation to students who are out later than buses would normally be running.

The White LOOP offers service across campus and into Downtown State College. The extended service will begin this week.

It is being offered by CATA in partnership with the Penn State Office of Transportation Services and is funded in part by the UPUA through an agreement with Penn State administration to extend its exiting transportation contract with CATA. Part of the money to pay for the service, an estimated $12,000, will come from allocations previously set aside for the Highlands Loop proposal and other funding sources.

The trial run is scheduled to continue through the semester, although CATA specified in a news release that it and Penn State have the right to discontinue it at any time. At the end of the semester, a decision will be made to continue the trial, incorporate service into CATA’s regular service or end the program. Those making the decision will consider several factors, including ridership and rider’s behavior.

“With this service enhancement comes an additional responsibility for students who might choose to ride after consuming alcohol, and the actions of those individuals will be taken into consideration with regard to whether or not the trial service becomes permanent,” said CATA General Manager Hugh Mose in a news release.
