FIRST ANNUAL HARVEY MILK WALK AND RALLY

Published: May 24, 2010

The LGBT community and the Justice League held the first Harvey Milk Walk and Rally on the birthday of the activist San Francisco City councilman who was assassinated by a homophobic bigot. Milk was the first openly gay elected official in the country. The Rally began with a reading of a proclamation by Elizabeth Goreham, mayor of the Borough of State College. It was followed by stories and speeches from various dignitaries and ordinary people.  After the rally the group of about fifty marched to the army recruiting office, where they protested the "don't ask, don't tell policy." A Viet Nam War vet who had been openly gay in the service for 8 years spoke poignantly about his experiences.
