Centre County is home to some of the finest recreational areas in the state. State parks offer a variety of activities, including fishing, hunting, hiking, caving, skiing and sailing.

ALAN SEEGER NATURAL AREA

East of State College on U.S. Route 322 to Bear Meadows Road; turn south on Bear Meadows Road at the sign for Tussey Mountain Ski Resort; six miles south along this road, one mile past the Detweiler Run Natural Area. Hiking and picnicking.

BALD EAGLE STATE PARK

BEAR MEADOWS NATURAL AREA

East of State College on U.S. Route 322 to Bear Meadows Road; turn south on Bear Meadows Road at the sign for Tussey Mountain Ski Resort. Hiking trails, rare plants and trees and a freshwater bog within Rothrock State Forest. 643-2340.

BLACK MOSHANNON STATE PARK

GREENWOOD FURNACE

PENN-ROOSEVELT STATE PARK

Turn west onto Crowfield or Stone Creek Road off U.S. Route 322, east of Potters Mills. Camping, fishing by boat, hiking and picnicking. 667-1800.

POE PADDY STATE PARK

POE VALLEY STATE PARK

R.B. WINTER STATE PARK

ROTHROCK STATE FOREST

Off U.S. Route 322 south of State College, covers about 95,000 acres of forest in Centre, Huntingdon and Mifflin counties; the well-known overlook atop Tussey Mountain along state Route 26 at the Centre-Huntingdon county line. Two designated pavilion areas with multiuse trails. 643-2340.

SHAVER’S CREEK ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

3400 Discovery Road in Petersburg. Fifteen miles south of State College off state Route 26 in the Stone Valley Recreation Area. Raptor Center, interactive exhibit room, hiking trails and butterfly gardens. STONE VALLEY RECREATION AREA

Off state Route 26, south of Pine Grove Mills. Penn State-operated, hiking, nature center, cabin and lodge rentals. WHIPPLE DAM STATE PARK
