Juwan Staten’s Penn State career ended before it began.

The Dayton transfer, who had decided to come to Penn State in April, will instead enroll at West Virginia, Staten confirmed via text message late Saturday.

The 6-foot-1 point guard from Oak Hill Academy was the highest-ranked recruit to commit to play for Ed DeChellis. ESPN had him as the nation’s No. 12 point guard in the Class of 2010. He left Dayton after an up-and-down freshman season during which he averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 assists per game but shot 39 percent from the field and 15 percent from 3-point range.

Staten was set to enroll in summer classes at Penn State but hesitated when DeChellis left for Navy late last month. He didn’t immediately rule out the Nittany Lions, though.

“I don’t want to make any decisions not knowing who the next coach is going to be,” Staten told the CDT on May 23, the day DeChellis’ resignation was made public. “I want to give Penn State the opportunity to see who that (new) coach is before I make my decision.”

Staten’s departure means that new Penn State coach Patrick Chambers will have a scholarship to work with for the Class of 2012 after all. Guard Cammeron Wood-yard is the only Nittany Lion who will have senior eligibility this season.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference announced today that the Council of Presidents/Chancellors approved a recommendation from university administrators for the cities of Chicago, Hoffman Estates and Indianapolis to rotate as the host sites for the Big Ten Football Championship Games and Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments for a four-year period beginning with the 2012-13 academic year.

The inaugural Big Ten Football Championship Game will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in December, and that facility will also host the title game in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The 2011 Big Ten Football Championship Game will be played in prime time on Dec. 3, 2011, with the winner earning the Big Ten Championship and a chance to play in the Rose Bowl Game or BCS National Championship Game.

The Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments have been held jointly in Indianapolis and Conseco Fieldhouse for the last four years and will be back in the Circle City in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

The 2013 and 2015 men’s tournaments will return to Chicago and the United Center, which hosted the inaugural men’s tournament in 1998 and on seven total occasions, most recently in 2007. The women’s tournament will be held in suburban Chicago for the first time when the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., hosts the event in 2013 and 2015.
