WILTON, Conn. Penn States Tommy McDonagh pulled off a major comeback over the final 11 holes to win the 109th Connecticut Amateur golf title at Rolling Hills Country Club on Saturday.
The Nittany Lion senior rallied from 3 down in the 36-hole match play final to earn his first amateur crown since 2006, when he as a 16-year-old he became the youngest ever champion of the Connecticut Amateur. McDonagh beat Matt Smith 3 and 2 for the title.
On the final day of the week-long tournament, McDonagh sank an eight-foot par putt on the eighth hole to cut his deficit to 2 down.
On the next hole, McDonagh drilled his tee shot off a tree and into the rough behind the eighth green. McDonagh never played a ball in the ninth fairway, cleared the trees and managed to cut another stroke from Smith in a run of winning four straight holes to lock up the championship.
