State College American Legion Baseball will hold an alumni game at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shaner Complex in Boalsburg.
More than 70 former players are appearing in the game. Each player made a contribution to fund the Louis F. Gatto Award and Scholarship fund. Gatto, an avid American Legion Baseball supporter, died earlier this year at age 81.
The award and schoarlship will be given annually to the State College Legion player who most exemplifies the qualities that Gatto demonstrated during his time around the team.
Because State College didn’t field an American Legion team this summer, Gatto’s nephew, Trey Nicosia, will receive the award. Nicosia helped State College advance to last year’s American Legion state tournament in Boyertown. A plaque honoring Gatto and award recipients will be permanently displayed at Legion Post 245.
A cookout will be held during and immediately after Saturday’s game. Teams were selected in a draft format. Dave Carfley is managing the White Team with Harold Stein and Paul Baker serving as coaches. Travis Snyder is managing the Blue Team with John Carfley serving as a coach.
