WILLIAMSPORT — Williamsport’s Colin Kleven ensured the State College Spikes didn’t receive a major spark from their newest addition.
Kleven allowed two hits in seven innings as the Crosscutters blanked the Spikes 7-0 on Saturday at Bowman Field.
The game marked the professional debut for Alex Dickerson, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ third-round draft pick from Indiana University. Dickerson, who batted third and served as the designated hitter, went 1-for-4 with a seventh- inning double off Kleven. The double didn’t lead to a run as Dickerson was stranded at third base.
Dickerson grounded and popped out in his first two at-bats. He ended his first game by striking out looking in the ninth.
Chris Lashmet had the Spikes’ (8-21) only other hit off Kleven. Lashmet led off the fifth with a single. The inning ended with Samuel Gonzalez lining into a double play.
Ashley Ponce’s two-out single off Cody Fick in the eighth was the Spikes’ only other hit. Fick pitched a scoreless inning before Colton Murray tossed a perfect ninth.
Williamsport’s three pitchers struck out five. The trio walked none and faced just 31 batters. Kleven, the Philadelphia Phillies’ 33rd-round draft pick in 2009, struck out two.
Spikes starter Matt Benedict allowed 11 hits and six runs, including four earned, in 42/ 3 innings. The Crosscutters
(15-14) took control by scoring three runs in the third. The inning included Bob Stumpo’s RBI double and Kenny Miramontes’ two-run single with two outs.
The loss ended the Spikes’ four-game roadtrip. They went 1-3 on the trip, recording their lone victory Friday at Staten Island. The Spikes scored just seven runs in the four games.
The Spikes and Crosscutters will resume their series at 6:05 p.m. tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
