Veterans now have an even better reason to take a vacation on the weekend honoring their service.

Hundreds of bed-and-breakfasts throughout the country are offering a free night’s stay to active-duty and retired members of the armed forces on Thursday, Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day.

“It’s a great way for us to do something to thank the veterans,” said Marti Mayne, a spokeswoman for the Professional Association of Innkeepers International.

Last year, the event’s third, more than 900 bed-and-breakfasts across the country participated, and Mayne said she expects even more to join the campaign this year.

“Inns are very much gung-ho for these kinds of promotions, and I know we’re going to get a good number from Pennsylvania,” she said.

Nancy Noll, the owner of The Queen Bed and Breakfast in Bellefonte, said her “awesome” experience last year with a husband and wife from Lewistown who were both veterans made her eager to sign up for the program again this year.

“They certainly deserve it,” she said.

So far, The Queen is the only local participant in the event, but Mayne said the majority of innkeepers have not yet gotten around to signing up, and that she expected more would be available to accept reservations by Sept. 11.

Most inns are only offering one room, so Mayne recommended veterans check the organization’s website, www.betterwaytostay.com, frequently for updates. Veterans should call the inn as soon as possible to try to nab a reservation, she said, as the rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
