There are times that you just think about getting off the couch and doing something active. Those first days of the new year. Countdown to swimsuit season. All summer long.

But fall? Fall is sweaters that will cover up flaws. Cocooning yourself in the house. Comfort food.

The Moshannon Valley YMCA has things that will help Philipsburgers focus on being healthy through this time of year, though. Things like the Fall Fitness Frenzy.

Whether you’re a member or not, sign up for the Frenzy and you can participate in activities like fitness classes (on a space available basis) or make use of the Y’s cardio or weight room facilities.

Sign in at the desk to have your participation validated each day, and if you complete your pass by Oct. 6, you are eligible to be entered in a drawing for a free 3-month membership. If you complete the Frenzy and decide to sign up by Oct. 10, you get your first month free. Already a member? You’ll get $10 off November’s dues, and an extra $10 for referrals who join.

Logging some time on those treadmills might just put you in shape to take on the wilds of Black Moshannon State Park with the Y’s Family Fun 5k Walk on Oct. 1.

Preregister for the event by Sept. 25, and it’s $12 for adults, $6 for kids ages 5 to 17. Younger kids are free. Registrations are not accepted from Sept. 26 to 30, but will be accepted the day of the event at a cost of $15 for adults, $9 for kids 5 to 17.

The walk follows a picturesque path along Westside Road, guaranteeing enough fun that you won’t even realize you’re being healthy. Don’t tell the kids. Just let them think it’s all about having a good time.
