SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Three Penn State sophomores were named American Volleyball coaches Association All-Americans on Wednesday.

Deja McClendon was selected to the first team, Katie Slay picked up second team honors and Ariel Scott made the third team. The awards are the second for McClendon and first for both Scott and Slay.

Fresh off a 25-8 season which ended with a 3-0 loss to UCLA in the NCAA regional semifinals last Friday — ending a streak of four consecutive national championships — Penn State added to its volleybal legacy with the honors. The Nittany Lions have had 71 All-America selections since 1979 and head coach Russ Rose has had at least one on his team in all but one of his 33 seasons with Penn State.

The three selections for the Nittany Lions are the second-most for any program this year, following only the four chosen for Southern California and matching the three picked for Texas.

McClendon, one of three sophomores on the first-team list, was a second- team selection and national Freshman of the Year last season. She led the team with 432 kills, averaging 3.54 per set, while also averaging 2.01 digs and 0.50 blocks per set.

Slay, the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year, led Penn State with 173 blocks, averaging 1.42 blocks per set to lead the conference and rank 13th in the nation. She also hit .386, which was second in the Big Ten and 15th in Division I, and averaged 2.11 digs per set.

Scott was second on the Nittany Lions with 418 kills, also averaging 3.54 per set, and was third on the team with 0.73 blocks per set.
