Anthony Lubrano, a vocal critic of how Penn State trustees have responded to the Jerry Sandusky scandal, is seeking a seat on the university’s board.

Richard J. Puleo, a 1977 graduate calling for open meetings, and State College native Orrin “Rich” Bundy III also announced that they are running for seats.

Lubrano said he has submitted his name to Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, a group of alumni and other Penn State fans who are unhappy with how the board has been handling the situation, including the decision to fire Joe Paterno.

“This is about the governance of our university and what happened Nov. 9 made us all acutely aware that this university isn’t managed the way we thought it was managed,” Lubrano said.

Trustees announced the decision to fire Paterno and Graham Spanier, the university’s president, in a hastily called news conference the night of Nov. 9, after private meetings.

The university’s baseball field is named for Lubrano, a 1982 graduate and Glenmoore resident who has a financial consulting firm, A.P. Lubrano & Co.

Lubrano said he would like the support of Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship.

Puleo is an attorney who lives in Lancaster. He is co-founder and chairman of First CornerStone Bank, which is headquartered in King of Prussia. He has also been a trial attorney for the Internal Revenue Service.

He said he doesn’t think the board should have closed-door meetings.

“My platform will be simple — all board of trustee meetings shall be open to the public,” Puleo said in a statement announcing his decision to run.

Puleo was a member of the 1977 wrestling team at Penn State. He and his wife, Lorraine, endowed a scholarship for wrestling at the university.

Bundy earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Penn State in 1993 and a master’s in 1996. He has a master of business administration from Michigan State University. He is the son of longtime Blue Band director Richard Bundy Jr.

Bundy is president and CEO of the University of Vermont Foundation in Burlington. He was vice president for development at the Iowa State University Foundation and a fundraiser at Michigan State University, and worked at Penn State’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

“Over many years working in higher education administration, I’ve gained extensive and relevant experience with institutional strategic planning, resource development, external relations, and crisis management, and will use these professional skills to serve the Penn State community as a member of the board,” Bundy said in an announcement.

His activities at Penn State include being a founding member of Parmi Nous alumni interest group, which recognized him as an alumni with distinction in 2007.

Three of the board’s nine alumni seats are up for election this year. So far, about 17 Penn State graduates have announced their plans to run for a seat on the board.

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship spokeswoman Maribeth Schmidt said that group has received 30 applicants, with a deadline of Friday. That group will narrow its pool to five candidates that it will announce Feb. 1 and allow group members to use an online voting tool to pick three candidates to endorse.

The university will distribute electronic ballots April 10 with a deadline for returning them by May 3.
