BENNER TOWNSHIP — An aerosol can that exploded after being mistakenly burned with other garbage sparked a brush fire along 10 to 15 acres of land Monday afternoon.

The blaze started shortly after 2 p.m. as two people were burning trash near a home off of Purdue Mountain Road near Fillmore.

The fire didn’t harm the nearby home, but it spread up the mountain and smoke could be seen from miles away.

Bellefonte Fire Chief Fred Bruno said the blaze only burned brush and didn’t ignite any trees. There were no injuries or property damage either, he said.

Still, the terrain provided challenges for firefighters who had to haul hoses up the mountain.

“It’s a steep climb,” said Bruno. “We ended up calling in additional manpower from neighboring companies because it was so steep.”

Nittany Wildland Firefighters, a group consisting of firefighters from across Centre County and the surrounding area, provided assistance to Bellefonte’s Logan and Undine fire companies. So did Milesburg’s fire company.

The about 30 firefighters and support personnel had the blaze mostly extinguished by 4:30 p.m.

“We’re under control,” Bruno said an hour later, as crews continued to work. “We’re just hitting some hot spots, doing some mop-up.”

Bruno said the people responsible for the fire would not face any charges.
