Oliver ends playing career

UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State junior forward Billy Oliver has decided to end his playing career due to recurring symptoms related to concussions and migraine headaches.

"It's a decision that I put a ton of thought into," Oliver said Saturday after the Nittany Lions defeated Nebraska 67-51 in the Bryce Jordan Center. "I talked to my parents, talked to my coach countless times. It seems right to me and more importantly to my team."

Oliver, a 6-foot-8, 230-pounder from Chatham, N.J., will remain with the team in some capacity next season after earning his degree in finance this May, but will pursue a second degree on a medical scholarship, which will not count against Penn State's 13-scholarship limit.

Oliver missed his first two seasons at Penn State due to concussions and migraine headaches. He was a role player on the Nittany Lions' NCAA tournament team last season and took a larger role this season, starting each of Penn State's first 19 games. He missed four games in late January as his symptoms came back, though, before returning last week for games at Iowa and Michigan State. He averaged 6.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 24 minutes per game.
