Choosing the next hero

I have always thought of Penn State, my alma mater, as a solid rock. If the present trustees continue, I feel our rock could crumble.

These 32 trustees claim their decision to fire Joe Paterno was unanimous. One of the most hurtful parts of this nightmare has been knowing some of the trustees were former football players who didn’t have the courage or decency to speak up for Paterno. Two had taken an oath in medical school to “do no harm,” but it indeed caused severe harm for the Paterno family, extended family of students and alumni and the university.

I encourage all to read the book “Captains’ Letters to Joe.” Especially study page 63. How quickly that writer, a trustee, changed his tune on Nov. 9.

The Paterno memorial service was elegant — one for the ages. Each speaker described the real Paterno, a great man. Nike CEO Phil Knight chose a winner when he selected Paterno as his hero.

Paterno was my hero, too. I won’t have Knight’s problem of deciding who his next hero will be. I already have chosen Knight for my hero.
