State police said a truck driver who survived a gasoline tanker accident Friday morning in Patton Township was driving at a safe speed before the crash.

Roy Dunlap, 47, of Tyrone, was traveling 17 mph, according to his company’s global positioning system readings, as his tanker turned onto an Interstate 99 entrance ramp at the Grays Woods interchange, Trooper John Foley said Tuesday. The tanker tipped over, caught on fire and completely burned.

Dunlap’s speed was below the limit for the ramp, Foley said. Contrary to information in an initial news release, police did not charge him with a traffic violation.

Foley said Dunlap, who was driving for Goodman Tank Lines out of Stowe, blamed shifting gasoline in his tanks for the accident. Police closed the investigation Tuesday.

Dunlap, who was wearing a seat belt, escaped from his cab through the windshield and was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Police closed a stretch of North Atherton Street for about three hours.
