Eight Centre County wrestlers received top seeds for this weekends District 6 Class AAA wrestling tournament in Altoona.
Bellefonte leads the 10-team field with three top-seeded wrestlers. The group includes freshman Trevor Corl at 113 pounds, senior Tom Traxler at 120 and junior Nick Shawley at 195.
Bald Eagle Area and Philipsburg- Osceola are also entering with multiple No. 1 seeds. Senior Matt Dillon (138) and junior Jake Taylor (170) are seeded first for the Eagles. Seniors Logan Walstrom (145) and Jared Smith (152) are the Mounties No. 1 seeds.
State College sophomore 106-pounder Mike Kauffman is the countys other top-seeded wrestler.
Seniors Ryan Burnheimer (182) and Josh Duplin (285) give Westmont Hilltop two No. 1 seeds. Central Mountains Brian Brill (160), Altoonas T.J. Brandt (126), Johnstowns Malcolm Harris (132) and Mifflin Countys Tyson Searer (220) are the tournaments No. 1 seeds.
Taylor, Burnheimer, Duplin, Brandt, Brill, Searer, Bald Eagle Areas Travis Giedroc and Central Mountains Dillon Gavlock won titles last year.
Giedroc is seeded fifth behind Kauffman, Hollidaysburgs Damian Huff, Westmont Hilltops Logan Blackburn and Philipsburg-Osceolas Chris Thompson at 106. Gavlock, who missed part of the season with an injury, is seeded second behind Smith at 152.
Traxler, Burnheimer, Duplin and Brill are searching for their third titles this weekend. Traxler lost to Westmont Hilltops Josh Polacek in last years 119-pound final after winning titles at 112 as a freshman and sophomore. Burnheimer and Duplin both owned one Class AA title before the Hilltoppers entered Class AAA last year. Brill has won two straight district titles since transferring to Central Mountain from District 4 Wellsboro.
Central Mountain has won the past five team titles. The two-day tournament begins with preliminary bouts at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The finals are at 7 p.m. Saturday.
