April 11 Penn State football notes

Posted by Guy Cipriano on April 11, 2012

– Coach Bill O'Brien said on today's Big Ten spring football teleconference that there's “no separation” among starting quarterback contenders Matt McGloin, Paul Jones and Rob Bolden. All three are receiving equal time with the first team. O'Brien wants to have the competition down to two players at the end of the spring.

– O'Brien said he has “no thoughts whatsoever” on Ohio State coach Urban Meyer's recruiting practices. Linebacker Camren Williams, defensive back Armani Reeves and defensive tackle Tommy Schutt orally committed to Penn State yet ultimately signed with Ohio State. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema has expressed disdain for Meyer's recruiting style.

– The first-team secondary currently includes Stephen Obeng-Agyapong and Malcolm Willis at the safeties and Curtis Drake and Stephon Morris at the corners. Drake is a former wide receiver.

– Obeng-Agyapong said the terminology in the secondary has changed. The hero position is now referred to as strong safety.

– Senior fullback Michael Zordich said offensive players, including the fullback, are lining up on different spots on the field. “It's not a traditional fullback in terms of what Penn State usually uses,” Zordich said. “But it's a fun spot to play.”
