Farmers Markets

Published: June 3, 2012

Agriculture is among Pennsylvania’s leading industries. As winter gives way to spring, farmers markets sprout statewide, offering consumers a chance to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables.

The state Department of Agriculture’s WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program aim to provide fresh, unprepared fruits and vegetables for those at risk of malnutrition and to expand awareness and use of farmers markets.

Four $5 vouchers are available each season for WIC recipients and people 60 and older whose pre-tax income is 185 percent of the poverty level — $20,147 for an individual or $27,214 for a couple.

Vouchers can be redeemed at select farmers markets and farm stands across the state between June 1 and Nov. 30. For more information about the program, contact the Centre County Office of Aging at 355-6716 or visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us.
