Letter to the editor | President sidesteps

Published: June 20, 2012

Whether you are a Democrat, Republican or independent, you should be concerned about President Barack Obama’s unilateral decision to essentially declare amnesty for about 800,000 immigrants brought to the United States illegally by not enforcing immigration laws.

The end result may be noble. However, the president took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” America is a constitutional republic with three equal branches of government — the executive, legislative and judicial.

Congress makes laws; the president enforces laws passed by Congress. Constitutionally, the president can’t selectively pick laws that he won’t enforce, nor can he make his own laws to circumvent what he considers to be the inaction of Congress.
