Letter to the editor | An unpatriotic vote

Published: June 29, 2012

July Fourth is a good time to think about the rights we have as Americans.

The right to vote is one of our most fundamental rights.

At least, it used to be. Philadelphia resident Wilola Lee was born in Georgia. She’s been voting for 30 years. Because of Pennsylvania’s new photo ID law, she will need a birth certificate in order to get a photo ID so she can vote this November.

She’s been trying to get a birth certificate for almost 10 years. But Georgia says there is no record of her birth.

So Lee will be unable to vote, thanks to Pennsylvania Republicans such as Jake Corman and Kerry Benninghoff.

Amazingly, even after admitting that voter fraud is virtually nonexistent, Corman still voted for Pennsylvania’s photo ID law.

So, when you see these two characters parading around on the Fourth of July pretending to be patriotic, just remember that they voted for a bill that took away the right to vote from some American citizens and will make voting more difficult for many others. You can’t get more unpatriotic than that.

Those of us who are still allowed to vote should remember this in November, too.
