A 60-year-old Maryland man seen masturbating in his van in an apartment complex parking lot was sentenced Friday to two years’ probation.

Alan Mergenthaler, of Ellicott City, Md., pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of indecent exposure in May. Four other counts were withdrawn as part of his plea deal with prosecutors. State College police said a female college student saw Mergenthaler masturbating in his van on March 15. As she wrote down his license plate number, he drove away, police said.

Police found Mergenthaler’s van parked on Locust Lane, and as officers approached, Mergenthaler was trying to fix his pants, which were undone.
