Protesters temporarily shut down gas drilling site

A group protesting a new Marcellus Shale gas drilling site in Moshannon State Forest caused the site to be temporarily shut down Sunday.

State police in DuBois confirmed protesters held a peaceful demonstration Sunday at the site, which is located in Clearfield County.

Three people were cited for disorderly conduct, however, after protesters blocked a road used by the company’s trucks. The road had been reopened Sunday night, police said.

A spokeswoman for EQT Corp., the Pittsburgh-based company operating the site, said rig operations were suspended for safety concerns.

“We won’t restart until we know it’s safe to do so, not just for our operators, but for police, protesters, everyone involved,” spokeswoman Natalie Cox said.

Cox said the site had just been commissioned.

Gloria Forouzan, of Marcellus Protest, said about 100 protesters gathered in the forest Sunday and blocked the access road.

State police said most of the protesters agreed to disperse and left the state forest Sunday night.
