Big Valley

Shocks of grain form a variety of patterns. (Thanks to Cub for giving me the correct name.)

R Thomas Berner

We went to Chocolate World in Hershey on Monday to give our Russian visitors a flavor of another location in Pennsylvania (no pun intended). As we came off Seven Mountains into Big Valley we passed a couple of fields with interesting arrangements of hay shocks. It was about 8:30 and the light was great.

But I didn't want to stop and delay us getting to Hershey. (We beat the crowds and got a front-row parking space outside Chocolate World.)

I knew we'd be taking our visitors to the train station in Lewistown the next day and arranged to leave a half hour early so I could stop and casually take some high dynamic range photos. This field is right at the Milroy exit and so there was plenty of room to pull off 322, which gave me a straight shot at the barn and put the morning light behind me.

The funny thing about the extra time is that I didn't need it. The train to Philly was a half hour late.
