Legendary country music superstar Randy Travis is headed for Centre County. The singer will take the stage tonight at Tussey Mountain Amphitheater.

Known as both a country and gospel singer and songwriter, Travis is on tour promoting his silver anniversary with shows spanning North America.

After a quarter-century in the music business, Travis fondly reflected on his milestone: “I’m surprised at how fast the first 25 years have gone by,” he said. “It feels like only five.”

To mark the official beginning of his 25th anniversary in music, the Marshville, N.C., native released the “Anniversary Celebration” album in June 2011. The 17-track CD features a combination of originals and some Travis favorites such as “More Life,”

“Road to Surrender,” “He Walked on Water” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.” The compilation features a stellar lineup of guest artists, including Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Kris Kristofferson, Carrie Underwood and George Jones, among many others.

Although Travis has enjoyed collaborating with numerous artists during his career, he does name a few fellow country legends with whom he’d like to work with.

“There are a lot of singers in this day and time that I’ve never done any work with, and I’d sure enjoy being in the studio with Reba McEntire and Martina McBride,” he said. “Hank Williams Jr. would, no doubt, be a lot of fun to work with; and Charlie Daniels is another one.”

When asked what he hopes his legacy in music will be years from now, the humble Travis said he just hopes that that he has created a body of work he can feel good about, along with all of the people who have written and played for him over the years.

“I don’t know what influence or mark that I’ve made on this business, because I honestly don’t really consider those things or see myself in that way,” he said.

While this is Travis’ first visit to Happy Valley, he has performed in the state before and says he enjoys coming to the area.

“We’ve played in Pennsylvania many times before and the response has always been wonderful,” Travis said. “It’s been a pleasure each time we’ve performed there over the past 25 years."

Randy Travis will perform at 8 p.m. July 20 at Tussey Mountain Amphitheater, off U.S. Route 322, Boalsburg. Call 272-0606 or visit www.thestatetheatre.org for more information.
