Penn State student pleads guilty to stealing truck

— A Penn State student who stole a box truck and later led police on a short chase through Lemont before crashing off the road has pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal.

Matthew Allen, 20, of University Park, was sentenced Thursday by Centre County Judge Pamela Ruest to serve four years of probation. Allen pleaded down to fleeing from police and theft, and three felonies were withdrawn as part of the deal with the Centre County District Attorney’s Office.

Allen will do two days of community service by working for the box truck’s owner.

Police said Allen stole the box truck on Waring Avenue in State College. After the truck was reported stolen, an officer saw it at the Sheetz on East College Avenue near Lemont. Police followed the truck as Allen pulled out of the Sheetz parking lot, then drove more than 40 mph on Pike Street until he crashed off the road, down the embankment.

Allen fled on foot across Spring Creek and got away.

Police were working on identifying Allen using a credit card receipt from Sheetz, but he turned himself in to university police April 4.

Allen will have to pay more than $17,000 in restitution.
