The Grammy Museum, Woody Guthrie Publications, the Woody Guthrie Archives and Penn State will present a daylong event on Sept. 8 at the University Park campus celebrating the legendary folk singer’s contributions to American music.

The event will start at 8:40 a.m. with a public conference, “Woody At 100, Woody’s Legacy to Working Men and Women.” Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, will deliver a keynote address which will be followed by presentations by filmmakers, educators and students.

Among those speaking will be Jerry Zolten, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Altoona, and musician-writer the Rev. Billy Wirtz; and Bob Santelli, co-editor of “Hard Travelin’: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie.”

At 4:20 p.m., Santelli will lead invited musicians playing in the evening concert in a roundtable discussion of Guthrie's influence on their music.

“This Land is Your Land: The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration Concert” will start at 7:30 p.m. at Eisenhower Auditorium, University Park, and will feature renditions of classic Guthrie songs by notable musicians including Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman, Tom Paxton, Janis Ian, Steve Forbert, Ben Sollee, Sarah Jarosz, Toshi Reagon and Melanie.

“The lineup scheduled for the (concert) speaks volumes about Guthrie’s influence,” Santelli said. “It’s truly an honor to be producing this all-star event.”
