Three people escaped serious injury Sunday night when a vehicle hauling ammunition and gunpowder caught fire around 9 p.m. on Interstate 80 in Boggs Township, according to firefighters at the scene.

Firefighters said a large trailer was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Shells being hauled by the vehicle were exploding due to the fire, they said.

According to a neighbor, it sounded like multiple rounds were being fired from a gun.

A stretch of I-80 was closed after the crash. Lane restrictions remained in place for about two hours, according to dispatchers.

Department of Transportation officials were reportedly inspecting a nearby overpass for heat damage.

State police at Rockview were investigating the crash, but did not provide any information by late Sunday night.

Firefighters said three people in the pickup suffered only minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

Citizens Hook and Ladder and Undine firefighters and Bellefonte EMS, Mount Nittany EMS and Pleasant Gap EMS personnel responded to the scene.
