STATE COLLEGE — A 19-year-old man who ran away from a local transitional living center is in jail, accused of trying to steal a car Sunday night.
According to charging documents, Tyler Stover told State College police he tried to hot wire a 1995 BMW. Police had picked him up after responding to the report he had run away from Stepping Stone transitional living center on South Burrowes Street. The center serves youth between ages 16 and 21.
Police said Stover told them the car started beeping and the doors locked after he broke part of the dashboard.
Stover also told police he tried smashing out a window of a Mazda 3i with a baseball bat, but it didn't work, and he smashed a tail light on the car and let out the air in one of its tires.
Stover was charged with misdemeanor counts of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.
He's in jail on $10,000 bail awaiting a preliminary hearing next week.
