STATE COLLEGE — The State College boys' golf team placed fourth out of seven teams in the first Mid-Penn Conference match on Monday at the Centre Hills Country Club.
It was a rough day for nearly all of the teams competing in their conference opening match.
Hershey was the only school to break 400 and finished with a 384 total for a 21-stroke win over Lower Dauphin. State College finished with a score of 439.
Ethan Kasales and Alex Stover were the low scorers for the Little Lions, each shooting an 85. Kevin Zuercher and Ben Gellenberg carded scores of 86 and an 88, respectively. Although he did not officially play in the match for State College, Eric Sheen shot an 83 on the day.
State College will head to the Blue Ridge Golf Course in Harrisburg on Thursday for its next match, which begins at 3:30 p.m.
Gitangali Bhushan, Juliette Greer and Callan Glover each won singles matches. In doubles, Sophie Randall and Elizabeth Easterling won their match in straight sets. Caitlin McLaughlin and Amy Poissant were up a set and leading in the second set when the match was halted by rain.
“The girls did a nice job today, but understandably looked a bit nervous to open the season,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “We have a young inexperienced team and a lot to work on.”
State College will next host Northern High School at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
