UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State earned its second win over a top-10 program in three days, holding off No. 8 Virginia 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
The No. 9 Nittany Lions, who beat No. 3 Old Dominion on Friday, are 2-0 to open the season for the first time since 2007.
Brittany Grzywacz and Lauren Purvis scored firsthalf goals and Whitney Reddig added a second-half score as Penn State built a 3-0 lead before having to hold off the Cavaliers. Jenna Chrismer set up Reddigs goal in finishing off a penalty corner.
Paige Selenski, fresh off playing at the Olympics, scored the first Virginia goal and assisted on the other by Carissa Vittese as the comeback effort fell short.
The Nittany Lions, who travel to No. 6 Connecticut on Friday, outshot the Cavaliers 12-10, and keeper Ayla Halus withstood the late Virginia barrage, making six saves.
