A Penn State student reported missing more than a week ago was located Tuesday evening by police in Missouri.
Jesse W. McMillen, 21, was found staying with a resident of Springfield, Mo., State College police said in a brief statement Wednesday.
McMillen was reported missing Aug. 18 by his roommate. Police said he had not been in touch with family or friends for about a week before that.
Before Tuesday, he was last seen Aug. 20, walking along Interstate 79 in Bridgeport, W.Va., carrying a cardboard sign.
The day before, McMillen was seen in Ebensburg, where he told a Red Carpet Inn worker he was trying to hitchhike his way to Pittsburgh to see a friend, police said.
McMillen was entered in the nationwide computer database as a missing person, but police didn’t indicate Wednesday if that’s how he was located.
He traveled approximately 1,000 miles, a nearly 17-hour trip on interstate highways.
Because he is not a minor, and because he has been safely located, McMillen will no longer be considered a missing person by police.
Police did not provide additional details, including whether McMillen plans to return to the State College area.
