Soccer: Nittany Lions boot Pitt again

— The No. 8 Penn State women’s soccer team continued its mastery of Pittsburgh with a 3-0 rout to win the WVU 90 Minute Classic on Sunday.

Maddy Evans and Tani Costa scored first-half goals for the Nittany Lions (5-1), who improved to 9-0 all-time against the Panthers. Christine Nairn added a second-half goal.

Evans, on assists from Costa and Nairn, scored on a cross just seven minutes into the game. Costa scored on a 22-yard blast near the end of the half on an assist from Jenna Kalwa. Nairn beat Pitt goalie Nicole D’Agostino in a one-on-one after taking a through pass from Corey Persson.

Erin McNulty and Britt Eckerstrom combined for the shutout in goal. McNulty started and had four saves, while Eckerstrom had three.

Penn State next travels to Brigham Young at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Nittany Lions edge Lafayette

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State did all of its scoring in the first half and held on for a 3-2 win over Lafayette on Sunday.

Kelsey Amy, Ashtin Klingler and Brittany Grzywacz scored for the No. 9 Nittany Lions (3-1), who outshot Lafayette 23-6. Hannah Sotiropoulos and Deanna DiCroce scored for the Leopards (2-1).

Penn State goalie Ayla Halus had three saves.

“Lafayette came to play today,” said Penn State coach Charlene Morett, whose team rebounded from a loss to No. 6 Connecticut on Friday. “They did a great job with defense against us and their goalkeeper played well.”

Penn State plays host to No. 4 Princeton at 6 p.m. Thursday.
