Letter to the editor | Lemont’s abuzz with bugs

Published: September 5, 2012

I think there are more mosquitoes in Lemont than ever before. I remember 30 years ago Lemont was almost mosquito-free.

It also seems to me that there are more cases of West Nile virus in State College and the surrounding townships than there are in outlying rural areas. I think there is a positive correlation with mosquito population and the local governments’ stormwater management programs.

I note with regularity the presence of standing water in many of Lemont’s stormwater sewers. Not only are they deep and dark, but the standing water must surely be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
