HUNTINGDON — Kahsim Buey was electric Friday night, but real lightning ruled the day at Huntingdons War Vets Field.
Weather halted the showdown between Bellefonte and Huntingdon at halftime, with Bellefonte leading 21-7.
The game will resume at 6 p.m. Monday.
Buey had touchdown runs of 80 and 8 yards before the first of two long weather delays. The sophomore also had a 67-yard scamper to set up a score and quarterback Phil Fenstermacker had a 20-yard scoring burst.
The first lightning delay came with 3:18 left before the half.
The teams returned to the field about 45 minutes later, finished the half and headed back to the locker rooms, never to return.
The Bellefonte High band boarded the buses for home around 9 p.m., and the game was called at about 9:25.
Just too many flashes, Huntingdon Superintendent Fred Foster said. The officials were involved in the decision, our A.D. was involved, the coaches were involved. We just felt it was the right decision.
PIAA rules require that play be stopped for 30 minutes anytime lightning is present.
Bellefonte coach Duffy Besch said the key now will be keeping his Red Raiders focused during a three-day wait for play to resume.
Both Bellefonte and Huntingdon are 0-1.
They wanted to play and we wanted to play. But at the end of the day its about the safety of the kids and everyone else involved, Besch said. Well just have to come back here on Monday and hope to keep playing the way we played tonight.
Besch will remind his squad that Huntingdon trailed Mount Union on opening night 21-7 before fighting back and falling 21-20.
We have to keep our focus, and well keep telling the kids that over the next couple of days, he said. This games not over. Theres still 24 minutes to play.
Buey had 162 yards on just four carries. Senior Brian White rushed for 48 yards on eight carries in the half for a Red Raider squad that was coming off a 42-17 season-opening loss to Bald Eagle Area.
Our line stepped up and did a job of controlling the line of scrimmage, Besch said. We worked on that all week. With our running backs, if we can get them a crease and give them some room, we can do some things.
On the defensive side, Jordan Corman had a sack for Bellefonte.
Junior running back Rhett Stetchock scored Huntingdons touchdown. He had 56 yards on nine carries in the half.
