U.S. Navy Lt. j.g. Joseph Barry Johnson III,a son of Joseph Barry Johnson Jr. and Amy Johnson, of Indiana, and a grandson of Joseph Barry Johnson and Honey Johnson Sr., and Betty McDonnell and the late Joseph McDonnell, all of Bellefonte, was awarded his Navy Pilot Wings on July 27. The ceremony was at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Milton, Fla. Johnson is assigned to HSC-East, Norfolk, Va., and will fly the MH-60S Nighthawk.

home-schooled student and a son of Michael Feffer and Carline Crevecoeur, of Boalsburg, was selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science to participate in a 10-day mathematics training program this summer in Washington, D.C.

Feffer was the youngest of 20 students in the country chosen for the program based on his score on the American Invitational Math Examination and his high interest in solving problems.

After the program, an advisory board selected two teams of four students to represent the United States in international competition. Feffer was chosen to compete for the U.S. at the Pan- African Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Tunisia this month. The excursion was subsidized by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
