Penn State volleyball: Slay is MVP as Lions sweep invite

UNIVERSITY PARK — The fourth-ranked Nittany Lion women’s volleyball team finished the Penn State Classic 3-0 on Saturday with a pair of wins over Duquesne and Eastern Illinois to improve to 10-1 on the season.

JuniorKatie Slay was named the Penn State Classic MVP, while freshman Megan Courtney and sophomore Lacey Fuller earned spots on the all-tournament team. Joining

the trio were Eastern Illinois’ Kelsey Roggemann, Portland’s Ariel Usher and Patti Abshire, and Allison Foschia of Duquesne.

Junior Ariel Scott, Slay and Courtney each posted nine kills with Slay leading the Lions with a .692 hitting percentage in a 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 win over the Panthers in the nightcap.

Sophomore Micha Hancock paced the offense with 36 assists and a team-high three blocks. Courtney led the team in digs with 12, while Fuller recorded eight.

Penn State defeated the Dukes 25-16, 25-16, 25-16 in the morning’s matchup, as Slay led the Lions with 12 kills and a .579 hitting percentage.

Courtney and junior Deja McClendon followed with eight kills apiece. Hancock had nine digs and 36 assists, while Scott had a team-high five blocks.
