A Pleasant Gap woman is accused of withholding food from and hitting her boyfriend’s young daughter.
The charges against 19- year-old Gabriela Mojica stem from an investigation by Spring Township police into an alleged assault on the girl by her father. Police said the girl’s father, Matthew Shuey, 29, punched and choked her because she forgot to bring a towel to sit on during the fireworks on the Fourth of July.
Both Mojica and Shuey face misdemeanor accounts of child endangerment and simple assault. Shuey faces an additional count of reckless endangerment.
Police said their investigation showed that Mojica withheld food from the girl or did other things to her as punishment.
For instance, police said she did not let the girl have a hamburger during the July 4 fireworks, and she would not let the girl out of the car to see them.
The girl told police she got one bite of a hamburger that night and wasn’t allowed to eat the rest of it. She told police that Mojica would hit her and make her cry, too.
The girl’s brother told police he heard Mojica hitting his sister and said he didn’t think his sister ate any meals the day of the fireworks. The brother also told police Mojica would not let the girl go to the bathroom.
Mojica is in jail on $50,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week.
Shuey was released on $25,000 bail in July, and is awaiting trial.
