UNIVERSITY PARK — After being surprised in dropping a set to Iowa, the Penn State womens volleyball team overpowered the Hawkeyes in the fourth set to complete a 25-20, 25-21, 27-29, 25-14 victory Saturday night at Rec Hall.
After struggling through a .132 hitting performance with nine errors in the third frame, the No. 4 Nittany Lions (12-1, 2-0 Big Ten) hit .500 with only two errors in the final set.
Deja McClendoncarried the offensive load with a match-high of 18 kills on 40 swings to go with 18 digs.Katie Slayadded 12 kills and six blocks,Nia Granthad 11 kills and six blocks andMegan Courtney had 10 kills and 15 digs. Micha Hancockgave out 53 assists to go with 11 digs and three aces and Dominique Gonzalez added 11 digs.
Penn State, which travels to Wisconsin and Minnesota next weekend, hit .279 while holding advantages of 62-47 in kills, 70-59 in digs and 14-4 in blocks. The Hawkeyes hit .126.
