Letter to the editor | Continue to seek the truth

Published: September 27, 2012

Penn State’s trustees don’t know beans (use your own word) about running a university.

The basic mission of a university is to pursue truth and push it on. The trustees instead are immersed in image. Whenever the trustees’ president opens her mouth, she makes me want to vomit.

As to why Louis Freeh would trash the university, giving him the benefit of the doubt, he probably believes his venom. He is imbued with the FBI culture — always get your man — and has the requisite ego. There are plenty of lawfully executed persons later proven innocent by DNA to suggest caution regarding prosecutors’ beliefs.

The only noncircumstantial evidence in his report shows just the opposite of the cover-up conclusion — that the reason for not reporting the second shower incident was to spare Sandusky the embarrassment of a repeat of probably the most investigated shower in history, the 1998 incident. The unanimous conclusion, then, was that no crime had been committed.

In hindsight, not reporting was a horrible mistake. The trustees, compounding this, have brought irreparable damage to the university. They should have the decency to resign.

In the meantime, let’s hope truth prevails and let’s work to that end.
