A tractor-trailer driver from Canada was taken by helicopter to the Altoona hospital after a crash Friday on Interstate 80 near Milesburg that briefly closed the eastbound lanes of the highway.
The crash happened at about 11:40 a.m. as the truck driven by John Avery, of Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, drifted off the left side of the interstate, damaged about 100 feet of guardrails and then hit the bridge over old U.S. Route 220, police said.
Avery’s condition was unknown Friday night at Altoona Hospital.
Police do not know what caused Avery to drift off the road.
The truck cab’s rear wheels were seen hanging over the edge of the bridge before it was towed away.
The trailer, which was hauling furniture, rolled onto its right side.
A vehicle behind the truck was hit with debris and got a flat tire.
