Former Centre County assistant DA facing felony charges for allegedly dealing pot

Former Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane is facing felony charges after allegedly selling marijuana he received from California and sold to employees at the law firm where he worked.

The charges — seven felony counts, a third-degree felony and a misdemeanor — were filed against Sloane on Monday. His arraignment is expected to take place today. It's likely a judge from outside Centre County will handle the arraignment because of Sloane's years working in the county.

According to online court documents, Sloane is being charged with selling marijuana in September and October 2011 to two different men.

When reached for comment, Sloane said he didn't know anything about the charges. He said he had been aware of an investigation last year.

Sloane, 53, was a Centre County prosecutor for a number of years until the current district attorney, Stacy Parks Miller, took office in January 2010 and made staffing changes. His time as a prosecutor included working for Ray Gricar, the DA who went missing and was later declared legally dead.

Robert Donaldson, partner at Masorti & Donaldson, said Sloane worked at the law firm from July to October 2011.

“When attorney Phillip Masorti learned there was some sort of investigation, he took swift action and terminated Steve immediately,” Donaldson said. “All members of the firm cooperated fully with the investigation that resulted in criminal charges being filed against Sloane today.”
