Sinkhole causes State College school district to close section of Memorial Field bleachers

October 1, 2012

A shifting sinkhole has led the State College Area School District to close a section of bleachers in Memorial Field, the site of home football games.

According to the district, plans currently are to continue to host games at the stadium. But, an announcement of a final decision about whether varsity football games will take place there is expected soon. Until then, visitors will have to sit in the west bleachers.

The problems were found when a structural engineer and workers were preparing the field for site work planned for later in the fall. Geotechnical studies found underground instability under part of the home bleachers, the district learned today. All other parts of the stadium are safe, the district said.

Engineers are expected to give the school board a report at the Oct. 8 meeting.
