1969 Sandusky starts coaching at Penn State

1977 Sandusky starts The Second Mile for at-risk boys, later expanded to girls

1998 Police investigate a report fromm the mother of a Second Mile boy that Sandusky showered with him. According to the police report, he told the mother, "I wish I could ask for forgiveness. I know I will not get it from you — I wish I were dead." No charges are filed.

Dec. 1999 Sandusky retires from Penn State, devotes himself to The Second Mile.

Feb. 9, 2001 Then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary walks in the Lasch Building to find Sandusky naked in the shower with a boy. McQueary later says he told administrators Tim Curley and Gart Schultz and coach Joe Paterno about the incident.

Nov. 7 Athletic Director Curley, now on leave from his job, and retired Senior Vice President Schultz are arraigned on charges of perjury and failure to report abuse

Nov. 9 Penn State trustees announce they're firing Paterno as coach and Graham Spanier as president, sparking student riots.

Nov. 21 Penn State appoints former FBI direcotr Louis Freeh to investigate university's handling of allegations

Nov. 22 Judge John Cleland appointed to the Sandusky case

Dec. 7 Sandusky arrested and arraigned on 12 more counts

Dec. 13 Sandusky appears in court for preliminary hearing, but waives right to hearing

Dec. 16 Curley and Schultz arraigned at preliminary hearing, which includes testimony by McQueary and the reading of the Paterno's testimony to the grand jury. The trial is scheduled for January 2013.

Jan. 22 Paterno dies of lung cancer

June 5 Jury selection for Sandusky trial begins

June 11 Trial begins

June 21 Attorneys rest their cases

June 22 The jury returns a guilty verdict on 45 of the 48 counts. Sandusky is taken into custody.

July 12 Louis Freeh issues his report, including his conclusion that Paterno, Curley, Schultz and Spanier tried to cover up the allegations of abuse by Sandusky. Penn State trustees commissioned the report and say they will work to implement the recommendations.

July 23 The NCAA levies harsh sanctions against Penn State. The penalties include a $60 million fine, a four-year ban from post-season play, a loss of football scholarships, and the vacating of all football victories from 1998 through 2011.

Sept. 20 Penn State announces it is hiring Ken Feinberg, the lawyer who oversaw the Sept. 11 victims' compensation fund, to help settle the cases of Sandusky victims.

Sept. 28 A judge puts the civil suit filed by Victim 1 against Penn State on hold because of the ongoing court matters related to the Sandusky case.

Oct. 2 McQueary files a lawsuit for $4 million against Penn State

Tuesday Sandusky sentenced to 30-60 years in state prison.
