Letter to the editor | Board actions understandable

Published: October 13, 2012

After reading the “Our View” article in the Sept. 30 CDT (“Childish display by P-O board”), I thought it was appropriate to respond.

On paper and up front, your article is most self-explanatory. It takes real journalism to get all the facts, and somewhere you missed a lot of information. Just like at Penn State, you can not base everything on one report.

The Philipsburg-Osceola board was extremely angry because of being deceived by some of the board members and the superintendent. The board at one time controlled the vote and granted Stephen Benson anything and everything he wanted. You need to spend more time looking into Benson’s actions behind the scenes and how the board at that time supported him.

You call the present board “childish.” I call them frustrated. They had to endure years of this and finally had the vote to not renew Benson’s contract.

They lashed out in a way that was maybe not to your liking. But I do think they were trying to please you.

In hindsight, maybe they should not have used the words they chose. My advice to you is get both sides before you print something.

My grandmother always told me that you get respect by earning it. Benson did not get respect because he did not earn it. The board members are not cohorts and Benson is the epitome of bullying.
