Letter to the editor | Divisive approach on religion

Published: October 13, 2012

I found the recent opinion piece by Rabbi David Ostrich misleading and unnecessarily divisive.

Rabbi Ostrich claims that religious groups are “under attack” from non-religious people in State College. While I can find no data on the breakdown of religious affiliation for the region, a look at the U.S. Congress is telling.

Of 525 members of Congress, there is only one proclaimed atheist. That’s less than 0.2 percent.

The article is sadly ironic as his stated cause is the purging of “intolerance and small mindedness and hate.” Why he would wish to not only close the doors on the “nonreligious” in this worthwhile cause, but invent a mythical war on the religious-minded (as if collectively they are a persecuted minority, comprising a mere 99.8 percent of our federal representatives) is disheartening and would be laughable if it weren’t so depressing.
