The tastes of Dutch Fall Festival returned to Penns Valley this weekend, drawing crowds and rave reviews.
The annual event brought hundreds to Aaronsburg to experience the arts and crafts, and more importantly, the food.
If the popularity of homemade sticky buns on Saturday was any indication, business was good.
Lines formed and patently waited for the sugary treat. And then waited and waited some more for a fresh batch. But in the end, getting the gooey morsels straight out of the oven was well worth it.
But the sticky buns had some tough competition for best desert in the form of apple dumplings, another staple at the festival. For those who couldn’t choose — and who could blame them — the answer was clear. Sample both.
Those who didn’t have a sweet tooth waited Saturday for a bowl of ham-and-bean soup. That too was flying off the shelves, and had nearly sold out for the day by Saturday afternoon, according to those working the booth.
The more adventurous picked scrapple or another traditional Pennsylvania Dutch meal: schnitz un knepp. The dish includes sliced apples and ham with dumplings.
The smell of those and more traditional items like the cooked chicken corn soup mingled in Don Wert Memorial Park as festival-goers of all kinds had their fill. Some even saved room of the annual ham pot pie dinner Saturday in the Aaronsburg Community Building.
