Field hockey: Kelsey Amy’s hat trick lifts Lions 5-1

Published: October 15, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK — No. 7 Penn State roke through the Big Ten’s top defensive unit by handing Iowa its first conference loss of the year with a 5-1 Senior Day victory Sunday.

Kelsey Amy scored three times, giving her 19 goals on the season, and assisted on one of two goals by Asthin Klingler for the Nittany Lions (12-3, 3-1). Klingler now has 20 goals this year.

“I was just so proud of our seniors today and the team overall,” head coach Charlene Morett said. “They were very aggressive from the start. Kelsey Amy had a great game for Senior Day, as did Lauren Alwine and Hannah Allison. And Ayla (Halus) made some great saves in the second half. The seniors really led the team today.”

Lauren Gebhart picked up an assist on an Amy goal on a penalty corner as Penn State built a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes and outshot the Hawkeyes 14-2 by halftime.

Iowa’s Jessica Barnett scored with two minutes left to spoil the shutout as the Nittany Lions outshot the Hawkeyes 25-8 and held a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners. Ayla Halus made five saves in the win. Penn State visits Ohio State on Friday.
