Job description
The U.S. Constitution prescribes that the Senate be composed of two senators from each state (therefore, the Senate has 100 members) and that a senator must be at least 30 years of age, have been a citizen of the United States for nine years, and, when elected, be a resident of the state from which he or she is chosen. A senators term of office is six years and approximately one-third of the total membership of the Senate is elected every two years.
The Senate has several exclusive powers not granted to the House, including consenting to treaties, a precondition to their ratification consenting or confirming appointments of Cabinet secretaries, other federal executive officials, military officers, regulatory officials, ambassadors and other federal uniformed officers, as well as trial of federal officials impeached by the House.
